Water, swimmers, Port Dover and the hotel

I guess Scotland is in my blood because there something about being by the water's edge that I've always loved; especially where there's a tide. Our neighbour Laura took me and her friend Darlene to Port Dover for an outing. I especially enjoyed our meal at the Erie Beach Hotel (thanks Laverne!). Lake Ontario in Toronto and Lake Erie here in St. Thomas are two completely different palettes ... hmmm .. maybe an excuse to buy some new colours!

Bowls

My palette changed somewhat when we moved to St. Thomas, away from the always-green grass of corporate lawns in Toronto. Looking out my studio window, I see our parched lawn that this summer has given us, the occasional dead leaf blowing by. I welcome this variety of un-seasonal colours; mustards and chocolates mixed with spring green and pinks, brilliant blue noon skies and moody evening sunsets.

Maybe I'll head into scarlet, orange, rust etc., and paint the gloaming in see from our deck.

Poppies

I love poppies. They have such strong, beautiful colours and yet such a delicate blossum. Red always seems tricky to me, getting the right richness. My favourite paint, Tri-art has a few really juicy reds, giving me a good base to start from. I love the negative space.

The orange shirt

This portrait has had more faces than Eve - I often work and
re-work an image until it gets to be what I see in my head.
I might change this one some more ...
